Master thesis on digital innovation for agricultural SMEs

How to organize innovation at agricultural SMEs?
As part of my Master’s in Business Administration at the University of Amsterdam, I dedicated my thesis research to exploring how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the agricultural sector can better organize innovation. To ensure practical relevance, I am partnering with relevant trade organizations to extend the research into real-world situations. This project aligns with my passion for supporting sustainable growth and enhancing the competitiveness of the agricultural industry.

The research
My thesis addresses key challenges faced by agricultural SMEs and provides actionable insights to foster innovation. The research focuses on:

  • The role of leadership: Examining how leadership, moderated by the influence of ownership, impacts innovation strategies within SMEs.
  • Frameworks for innovation: Applying established models and best practices to create structured approaches for implementing innovation.
  • Collaborative ecosystems: Exploring the role of partnerships and networks in driving successful innovation.
  • Employee education: Addressing the challenge of keeping employees and vocational second-grade students up-to-date with the latest advancements in the fast-evolving agricultural industry.

To extend the research into real-world situations, I’m partnering with relevant trade organizations. These collaborations ensure that the insights from my work are grounded in practice and tailored to the realities faced by agricultural SMEs.

Key insights
The thesis emphasized the importance of leadership, education, and collaboration in fostering innovation. By engaging employees, aligning leadership with ownership dynamics, and creating ecosystems for continuous learning, SMEs can overcome barriers and adapt to rapid advancements.

Impact
This research provides a roadmap for agricultural SMEs to embrace change, adopt sustainable practices, and thrive in an increasingly competitive environment. It also highlights the critical need for education and upskilling to prepare the workforce and the next generation for the demands of modern agriculture.

Looking Ahead
I aim to apply the insights from this thesis to help businesses in the agricultural sector innovate and grow sustainably. Through consulting, project management, and partnerships with trade organizations, I’m excited to support companies in implementing strategies that drive meaningful and lasting impact.
